Enter the magical realm of Sky Eater, where mermaids dance to the rhythm of the sea.
Sky Eater is the dreamy lovechild of water spirit Chelsea Skyeater and dub soldier TK Bassdread.
Born from an inspired fantasy, Mullumbimby’s Sky Eater is the culmination of Chelsea’s musical dream; an authentic expression of her messages to the world.
Chelsea writes music like she breathes air. Since the tender age of five she has been exploring her own emotional depths through music, and now she combines all those feels with her soaring vocals and TK’s rootsy soundscapes to create a contemporary fusion of dub, trip-hop and soulful pop that warms the heart.
“I want people to feel uplifted when they hear our music,” says Chelsea.
“To experience a depth of emotions. Find hidden messages. To feel like their life experiences and feelings are heard and validated.”
Her own life experiences form the core of Sky Eater’s themes and lyrics. Lack of freedom to create saw Chelsea’s marriage break down, from which point she was free to pursue her one true love: music.
Together, Chelsea and TK are not afraid to take risks and explore uncharted territory.
After they found each other and joined forces in 2018, Sky Eater found its niche in the musical landscape of beautiful Bundjalung Country, the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, Australia, developing an organic fanbase as a result of their unique and complex live dynamic.
Make no mistake, Chelsea Skyeater feels things deeply. Most at home in the underwater dimension of the deep blue sea, Mullum’s own little ocean sprite seeks to uplift audiences with her magical mermaid vibes and from-the-heart storytelling.
Meanwhile, TK Bassdread offers a sophisticated and contemporary take on live looping and dub effects that brings an impressive technical edge to the duo’s performances. His UK jungle upbringing, influenced by icons like Lee Scratch Perry and Mad Professor, fuels their electro-laden sets.
Drawing inspiration from trailblazing acts like Björk, Portishead, and Morcheeba, Sky Eater incorporates technical innovation seamlessly into their live performances. Innovation in both music and live technique is the hallmark of a Sky Eater show.
With loopstations and the power of Ableton, they meld live instrumentation with polished electronic beats, samples, immersive effects and midi instruments that meld seamlessly with the live elements, redefining the boundaries of live and electronic music, making for a surprisingly rich and layered duo sound.
And when they feel like dialing things up a notch further, they add in a powerhouse, all-female horn and backing vocal section featuring MsEleneous on clarinet and sax, and Aya Trumpet on the trumpet.
Take some shades of Sade, moments of Morcheeba, slices of Salmonella Dub, fragments of Fat Freddy’s and a heavy dose of DnB, and you’ll have a decent impression of Sky Eater’s sound.
Think reverb-soaked piano, dreamy vocal melodies, trip hop and reggae-infused beats with intuitive lyrics and sparkly jungle influences.
Sky Eater have released two EPs and multiple singles, toured extensively worldwide and played at Boomtown Fair (UK), Luminate Festival (NZ), Island Vibe (QLD), Nimbin Roots (NSW), Queenscliff Music Festival (VIC), Woodford Folk Fest (QLD), The Town (VIC) and more.
2023 sees them in full overdrive with the release of a brand new single, an LP release for Spring, and a whole lot more exciting shows on the horizon.
